We headed to Tenerife between late February and early March for a pretty straightforward reason: we wanted to find the sun without being surrounded by everyone else who had the exact same idea. To be honest, I didn't have the time or the patience to spend hours drowning in browser tabs, comparing beaches, hotels, and routes—but I knew it had to be done. While digging through Google for ideas, I stumbled upon a planning site called Exploryo. It allowed me to quickly generate a solid foundation for the trip, covering everything from accommodation and activities to transport. Since I wasn't really in a "planning mood," we decided to stick with their baseline and just adjust things locally if we felt like it or if any "vacation detours" popped up. And that’s exactly how it played out. We didn’t follow the itinerary to the letter, but that was the beauty of it: we didn't land on the island stressed about making a thousand decisions from scratch. It felt like someone else had already done the heavy lifting for us. Finding Our Rhythm in the South The accommodation recommended in the south turned out to be a great call. For us, it was crucial to have good weather and easy access to beaches, restaurants, and nightlife without feeling isolated in some "beautiful-but-impractical" corner of the island. The south was just right: convenient, sunny, and lively enough to keep things interesting without feeling like we were on a forced march to see everything. The first few days were textbook: • We settled in and took long walks to soak up the atmosphere. • We mastered the art of doing nothing on the beach. • I developed a deep, personal respect for papas arrugadas and those addictive mojo sauces. There’s a specific moment in every holiday where you stop comparing menus and just start ordering "the local stuff" and another round of whatever was good last time. We reached that point remarkably fast. The Plan vs. Reality Of course, not everything went strictly by the book. For example, we were supposed to head up to Playa de Las Teresitas one day. In theory, it sounded great. In practice, we decided the night before that it would be a crime to ignore the local nightlife. We went out for "just one drink," which in vacation-speak usually means "way more than was sensible". The next morning, the idea of driving to the north seemed a bit too ambitious for people who were clinging to their coffee more than the plan. So, we did what any normal tourist does: we adapted. We stayed south, slowed down, and traded the original route for a relaxed stroll along the promenade. No regrets. Getting Around & Highlights The logistics actually worked out better than I expected. Mixing local buses with a rental car was an inspired choice: • Rental Car: Perfect for the days we wanted total flexibility. • Local Buses: Saved us both money and the stress of parking on the other days. It’s one of those rare cases where "mixed transport" isn't just a nice phrase on paper—it actually made sense in the real world. The absolute highlight, however, was Mount Teide. The scenery up there is surreal, like you’ve hopped onto a different planet without noticing. One day you’re at a beach resort, and the next you’re in a volcanic landscape where the only thing missing is a NASA rover. We also stayed for a stargazing session under that crystal-clear sky; it’s one of those moments that doesn't look half as spectacular in photos as it feels in your memory. The Verdict What I loved most was that the itinerary wasn't rigid. It gave us clear suggestions but left enough "breathing room" so we didn't feel like we were racing through our own holiday. Some days we followed it perfectly; others, we scrapped the plan to linger at a terrace just because the vibe was right. Surprisingly, it was those little detours that made the trip so much better. Even though we didn't follow the Exploryo plan 100%, it was a lifesaver. It saved us a mountain of pre-trip research, gave us a solid structure for our stay, and still let us be spontaneous. And the cherry on top? (Not counting the flights), we actually ended up spending a little less than we’d originally estimated. That’s the best kind of holiday surprise: feeling more free than you planned and coming home with a bit of extra cash in your pocket
